  4. Click on "Page 1" and get out of your "A-Master"

  5. Download the illustration of Alice in Wonderland by Mary Winkler

  6. on the RIGHT side of your document (this is the front of the book cover), you'll PLACE this illustration using "File > Place" (command + D) (see #4)

  7. Now you're going to download and install the fonts you need for this book cover.

    1. The first font is called EB Garamond. Click the link, and a ZIP folder will download into your Downloads folder. Double click on it inside the Downloads folder and a regular folder will open. Double click that, and look for a file with the extension ".otf" - there are several - double click on them to install them in FontBook.

    2. Now download the font BonvenoCF and do the same thing.

  8. Now, get your Text Tool and make a box with it at the top of your margin - same width as your Alice illustration.

    1. On the top line type "ALICE IN" (use all caps) (don't include the quote marks)

    2. On the next line down type "WONDERLAND" (all caps) (don't include the quote marks)

    3. Highlight all of your text (command +A) and change your font to BoncenoCF Light.

    4. Make "ALICE IN" be 55 points, leading 66 and tracking to 30

    5. Make "WONDERLAND" be 33 points, leading to 39 and tracking to 30 (see #5 example)

  9. Now that you have the book title, we are going to make a line under it. Go to the Line Tool and draw a line just below your word "WONDERLAND" and make the line go from margin guide to margin guide (same as the word)

    1. Make sure your line is black and set for 3 points

  10. Next we are going back to the Text tool, make a box with it and immediately under our line, we are going to type the words "Lewis Carroll’s Traditional Tale Revisited" (don't include the quote marks) and center the type (command + shift + C) in the text box. Use the font EB Garamond in 16 point type. (see #6 example)

NOW we move on to the BACK of the book,
which is on the LEFT side of your page.

  1. Get the Text Tool and make a box from back margin to back margin that occupies approximately 2/3 of the back cover.

    1. Type the word: English

    2. Then copy/paste the following text in paragraphs as shown:
author, Lewis Carroll’s classic 1865 story tells of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world (Wonderland) populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre, and its narrative course and structure have been enormously influential, especially in the fantasy genre.

    3. Now hit "return" and leave a space. Paste the following:
"Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, ‘and what is the use of a book,’ thought Alice ‘without pictures of conversation?’

So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid). Whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly, a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her."

    4. Select your paragraphs you pasted, all of them, and change your text to "EB Garamond"

      1. Select the last two paragraphs and change your text to 14 point and Italic. (8)

      2. Your first paragraph should be "EB Garamond" and in 11 points Regular. (8)

      3. Now, select the "E" in English and go to the "Window" pull down and select "Type & Tables" then select "Paragraph"

      4. You will now create a drop cap that is 4 lines of text large. (see example "D"

    5. Now you will download the bar code as well as the publisher's logo for this particular work of literature.

      1. Once downloaded, go to "file" then "place" and position the barcode at the bottom right side of your back page margin.

      2. Once downloaded, place a circle in the lower right hand corner and go to "file" then "paste" and select your publisher's logo and then go to "Object" then "Fitting" then to "Fill Frame Proportionally". (see example video)

WE ARE NEARLY FINISHED WITH THE BOOK COVER!

All that remains is for us to do the SPINE OF THE BOOK

  1. We will take our Text Tool, make a small text box and type "Lewis Carroll" then change the font to EB Garamond SC 8 at 11 points. This will make his name in small caps (be sure to capitalize the first letter of each name

  2. Now, using your Selection Tool, rotate his name to 90° clockwise.

  3. Position the center of your textbox and the text within it along the center guide we placed.

  4. Copy (command + C) and Paste (command + V) your author name and realign it as shown in example.

  5. Change your font to Bonveno CF Light and type in "ALICE IN WONDERLAND" in all caps and set your tracking to 30

  6. Now make a small Photo Frame at the bottom of the spine and place the photo of the tea pot inside.

Once you have completed this, your book cover is complete!

TAKE A SCREEN SHOT OF YOUR ENTIRE SCREEN (command + shift + 4) by positioning your mouse in the upper left corner, clicking and dragging to the lower right corner. Turn in on your NEW Google Classroom.
